Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and MDdatacor Announce Pilot

A Health IT Solution to Improve Patient Outcomes

Boston, MA and Atlanta, GA (June 11, 2007) – Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) and MDdatacor, inc. today announced that they will begin work on a pilot project utilizing health information technology to collect and analyze patient medical records to provide the treating physicians with reports that identify patients whose current treatment does not achieve published clinical guidelines.

MDdatacor’s web-based solution combines patient medical records from disparate data sources such as electronic medical records, transcribed office notes and lab results received directly from the treating physicians with the claims and pharmacy data received from the health insurers into a searchable database. This information is analyzed and used in support of pay-for-performance, physician-centric disease management, and portable electronic health record programs.

“BCBSMA believes in rewarding doctors and hospitals for delivering safe and effective care, and in empowering patients to take more responsibility, become educated health care consumers and become stronger partners with their doctors. MDdatacor’s unique systems automate the retrieval of critical clinical information from patient’s medical records. This information then assists providers by identifying gaps in care. The system is particularly attractive because it is easy to adopt and can be used by many practices. Also, the system can easily find critical health outcomes data for a whole practice that the physician can act on, such as blood pressure and cholesterol levels,” said John Fallon, MD, Chief Physician Executive for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.

“We are pleased to have an opportunity to work with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, a health plan with a reputation for innovation in health care,” said Timothy Roche, co-founder, president and chief executive officer of MDdatacor. “Our organizations share a common goal, to improve patient care. The first step toward achieving this goal is the ability to collect and analyze clinical data to accurately measure patient outcomes.”

MDdatacor and BCBSMA will offer the solution to a select group of physicians in Massachusetts over the next several months and the pilot program will continue for approximately one year. Financial terms were not disclosed.
